Why NWHD-PE Fabric? / なぜ高密度ポリエチレン不織布なのか
When designing a product, selecting the most suitable materials is an incredibly enjoyable process. Texture, scent, design, durability, and ease of use—all of these factors are tied to the materials chosen. The joy of finding the perfect material is truly special.
プロダクトを考える際に、最適な材料を選定する作業は非常に楽しいものです。質感、香り、デザイン、耐久性、そして扱いやすさなど、すべてが材料に密接に関わります。納得のいく材料を見つけたときの喜びは格別です。
Paper is one of the materials we become familiar with from childhood. In Japan, many people may have memories of playing with origami or accidentally tearing shoji paper, the delicate partitions used in traditional rooms. While paper is generally weak against water and prone to tearing, its texture is incredibly appealing. In pursuit of that unique paper-like feel, we have tested various materials.
紙は幼少期より親しむ材料の一つです。日本においては、折り紙で遊んだり障子（和室で用いる紙の間仕切り）を破ってしまったりと、思い出がある方も多いのではないでしょうか。紙は一般的に水に弱く破れやすいものですが、紙の持つ質感はとても魅力的です。僕らは紙の質感を求め、さまざまな材料をテストしてきました。
In this case, I would like to briefly explain why we chose NWHD-PE (Non-Woven High-Density Polyethylene) fabric during the paper selection process, along with a bit of NWHD-PE’s history. The key points worth highlighting are its “balance of lightness and strength” and its “resistance to water” Let me first introduce an overview of Non-Woven Fabric.
今回は、紙選定の過程で高密度ポリエチレン不織布（NWHD-PE：Non-Woven High-Density Polyethylene）を選んだ理由と、NWHD-PEの歴史について簡単に説明したいと思います。特に注目すべき点は「軽さと強度のバランス」と「水への耐性」です。まずは、不織布の概要からご紹介します。
What is Non-Woven Fabric? / 不織布とは
Non-woven fabric is a water-resistant, tear-resistant material that resembles paper. It is made from synthetic fibers that are layered randomly and bonded together using adhesives or heat. The term “non-woven” means that the material is not woven in the traditional sense, where threads are interlaced, but rather the fibers are directly entangled to form the fabric.
不織布は、水に強く、破れにくい「紙のような素材」です。この不織布は合成繊維を原料としており、繊維をランダムに重ね、接着剤や熱で結合させてシート状にしています。「不織布」とは「織られていない布」という意味で、通常の布とは異なり、糸を織ることなく繊維を絡み合わせて作られています。
Non-woven fabric was first developed in the 1920s in Germany when felt manufacturers started using adhesive to bind wool scraps. In the 1950s, Japan began large-scale production of non-woven fabric.
不織布は1920年代にドイツで誕生し、フェルト業者が毛屑を接着剤で固めたのが始まりです。1950年代半ばには、日本でも本格的に製造が開始されました。
What is NWHD-PE Fabric? / 高密度ポリエチレン不織布とは
One of the most well-known examples of NWHD-PE fabric is Tyvek®️, developed by the American company DuPont. This special material is made by bonding ultrafine fibers, measuring 0.5 to 10 microns in diameter, through heat and pressure to form a sheet. Due to its excellent properties, it is widely used in applications such as building materials, medical protective clothing, and agricultural sheets.
NWHD-PEとして有名なものにタイベック®️があります。これは、アメリカのデュポン社が開発した特殊な素材で、0.5～10ミクロンの極細繊維を熱と圧力で結合し、シート状にしたものです。この素材は、その優れた特性から、建築資材、医療用防護服、農業用シートなど幅広い用途に使用されています。
Characteristics of NWHD-PE Fabric / 高密度ポリエチレン不織布の特徴
1. Easy Maintenance / お手入れが簡単
NWHD-PE is easy to maintain as it can be wiped clean with water even when it gets dirty.

NWHD-PE is extremely lightweight, even lighter than regular paper. This makes it easy to carry and install.

NWHD-PE is made from 100% polyethylene, making it recyclable into other polyethylene products if it is free of contaminants.
