Wara-ji are traditional Japanese footwear that have been worn since ancient times. Their history is very old, with records from the Nara period (710–794) and Heian period (794–1185) describing similar types of footwear, showing that they have supported Japanese daily life for over a thousand years. They feature excellent breathability and flexibility, with a structure that allows for walking while maintaining the natural feel of the soles of the feet, making them suitable for a variety of environments such as mountain paths and farmland. They are one type of footwear that helps preserve the natural sensations of the human foot.
